Database Sanitization Strategies for High-Concurrency Staging Environments

Maintaining clean state in shared staging databases during parallel test runs is one of the hardest problems in software automation.
Strategy 1: Transactional Nesting (SAVEPOINT)
Wrap every test execution block inside an explicit database transaction and execute a ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT during test cleanup:

SAVEPOINT test_execution_start;
-- Execute test mutations
INSERT INTO users (id, email) VALUES (101, 'test@example.com');
-- Rollback state mutation instantly
ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT test_execution_start;
COMMIT;
Limitation: Does not work for multi-threaded applications that open separate database connection pools, as uncommitted transactions are invisible across worker boundaries.
Strategy 2: Foreign-Key Aware Schema Truncation
When SAVEPOINT rollbacks are unfeasible, execute a topological sort on your schema dependency graph to truncate mutated tables in reverse foreign-key order:

TRUNCATE TABLE audit_logs, orders, users RESTART IDENTITY CASCADE;
SET session_replication_role = 'origin';
Executing table truncations via automated teardown hooks drops clean-up times from several minutes to under 300 milliseconds.
