Handling Dynamic Content & Animations in Automated Visual Testing

Flakiness in visual regression suites is almost always caused by dynamic data sources: ticking clocks, skeleton loaders, streaming avatars, and asynchronous CSS keyframe animations.
To achieve 100% deterministic visual baselines, you must control time and animation state before capturing snapshots.
1. Freezing CSS Animations and CSS Transitions
Inject a global stylesheet override into the headless browser session before firing snapshot commands:

2. Deterministic Date and Time Mocking
Override the global Date object and timer methods (setInterval, setTimeout) using Sinon.js or browser injection tools prior to DOM load:

3. DOM Element Masking via Data Attributes
Instead of writing fragile CSS selectors to target dynamic content, establish an explicit contract with frontend developers using dedicated test attributes:

During execution, the snapshot driver injects a utility script that converts all [data-test-visual=“mask”] elements into solid gray bounding boxes (background: #CCCCCC !important; color: transparent !important;), preserving layout geometry while masking variable data.
