Relying on vanity metrics like raw code coverage percentage or total manual test cases executed creates a false sense of security. True software delivery excellence requires measuring velocity and stability in tandem, as defined by the DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) framework.

The Four Core DORA Metrics

  1. Deployment Frequency (DF): How often code is successfully deployed to production.
  2. Lead Time for Changes (LTC): Time elapsed from code commit to running in production.
  3. Change Failure Rate (CFR): Percentage of production deployments causing degradations or outages.
  4. Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR): Time required to restore full service after a production incident.

Mathematical Formulation of CFR and MTTR

Change Failure Rate is calculated as the ratio of failed production deployments $F_{\text{prod}}$ to total production deployments $D_{\text{total}}$ within a given window $T$:
