Situation
With over 40 interconnected microservices deploying independently multiple times per day, traditional end-to-end integration tests were constantly failing due to unexpected backend API schema changes. Services often passed isolated unit tests but failed in production when JSON response contracts changed without warning.
Task
Architect an automated contract testing strategy using consumer-driven contracts and production traffic shadowing to decouple service deployments and ensure 100% schema compatibility across API boundaries.
Action
- Pact Contract Matrix Pipeline: Integrated Pact consumer-driven contract verification into CI pipelines, publishing JSON contract pacts to an enterprise Pact Broker and validating provider implementations against the matrix before merging.
- Istio Production Traffic Shadowing: Configured Istio service mesh route rules to mirror dark production HTTP traffic (
Envoyshadow mirroring) to experimental staging microservices, validating response payloads against production schemas in real time without impacting live end-user latency. - Automated Webhook Gatekeeping: Built GitHub status checks that queried the Pact Broker
can-i-deployAPI, automatically blocking microservice deployments if compatibility matrices indicated breaking contract changes for active downstream consumers.
Result
- Completely eliminated breaking API schema changes across 40+ microservices in production.
- Replaced 70% of slow, flaky end-to-end UI integration tests with lightning-fast, sub-minute contract verification checks.
